Chess Instructor...
My name is Ryan Phillips, and I am a chess instructor with over ten years experience. I have taught multiple state champions in Nevada. Additionally, I have over twenty years tournament experience. I tied for first place in the 2018 National Open U2100 section. I have had several other top five finishes in major tournaments over the years as well. I am currently rated 2129 USCF.
My teaching style is suited for players of all levels. The lessons slowly progress in difficulty, starting with solving problems with individual pieces on an empty chessboard. This ground up approach ensures a solid chess foundation from which the student can grow.
I am a hard working chess instructor who will work hard to ensure your child experiences chess success.

After playing tournament chess for many years, I became interested in passing on my knowledge to the next generation. I began offering my service on different websites, such as craigslist, and I also reached out to students via my local chess club. Since then, my chess classes have grown tremendously.
I usually teach kids, age 5-18. I would be open to teaching adults, but my primary experience is with children.
Due to my experience, I understand the pitfalls that new chess students are likely to fall into. I view my job as a chess teacher similar to the captain of a ship. My job is to avoid obstacles before they appear, so that students can have the smoothest path to chess improvement. I also am passionate about what I do, and I think students pick up on that. In order to get good at chess, one must enjoy it. I believe that if I could improve my student's chess understanding by 50%, but their enthusiasm diminishes by even 1%, it's a bad trade. And chess is largely a game of understanding what trades are good for you and which ones are bad.
My students improve over time. At first, learning chess is synonymous with learning a new language. It takes time to become fluent in the new language. But once the basics sink in, the improvement can occur quite quickly.
I will expect the best out of your children. I don't wish to simply receive money for students who are not really interested in learning chess. I will not be a chess instructor that will waste your child's time.
My philosophy is that we need to work hard and have fun. Without that balance, the improvement won't come. The more the student enjoys playing, the faster the improvement will come. And after some time of focused work, you can really see substantial improvement.
I am the 2018 National Open U2100 section champion. I have over ten years experience teaching chess, with about eight months of strictly online experience. I would not go back to in-person teaching due to the numerous benefits of online teaching. Some benefits are the ability to highlight squares, draw arrows and setup puzzles extremely fast.
I conduct the lessons via Zoom and chess.com. Zoom is simply for communication while chess.com is where the lesson takes place. The interactive chessboard on chess.com is perfect for private or group lessons.
